Arnold neuralgia
Those who frequently suffer from migraines may already know this, but each attack of headaches can be different from the other. It is precisely the characteristics such as onset, time, location and intensity that provide you and the specialists with the ability to discriminate against a common headache, perhaps given by daily stress, by something more insidious, perhaps a symptom of a real pathology. Therefore it is legitimate to ask ourselves: what if yours wasn't a simple headache?
Arnold's Neuralgia is certainly not among the most common, so reassure your hypochondriac side that already believes it is affected even before having read its symptoms. The term neuralgia literally indicates the suffering of a nerve; the nerve in question, Arnold's occipital nerve, runs under the second cervical vertebra, therefore very close to the posterior hairline, so to speak. Knowing its location will later help us understand where the doctor will go to seek suffering when he prescribes an instrumental investigation such as an X-ray, a CT scan or an MRI.
The characteristics of the headache that Arnold's Neuralgia generates in its typical form are:
Intense, throbbing pain
Distribution on half of the head, up to half the forehead.
The diagnosis is immediate: the cervical area where the nerve runs, as in the photo below, will be compressed with the thumbs, triggering the symptoms mentioned above. Furthermore, the area that will be probed could be either very sensitive or poorly receptive to the tactile stimulus.
Another therapy often adopted to treat Arnold's neuralgia is the administration of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), but if after 3-5 weeks there are no satisfactory results, such as evident decrease in pain and frequency of attacks, other ways are attempted. .
Personally in my experience as a holistic masseur, I was able to appreciate a good decrease in symptoms with appropriate cervical treatments and manipulations, but much depends on the cause that triggered the neuralgia: the best results are on the consequences of cervical trauma or on the onset of osteoarthritis .

Nevralgia di Arnold
Chi soffre frequentemente di emicrania forse lo sa già, ma ogni attacco di mal di testa può essere diverso dall’altro. Sono proprio le caratteristiche come esordio, tempo, localizzazione e intensità che forniscono a voi e agli specialisti la capacità di discriminare un comune mal di testa, magari dato dallo stress quotidiano, da qualcosa di più insidioso, forse sintomo di una vera e propria patologia. Perciò è lecito chiederselo: e se il vostro non fosse un semplice mal di testa?
La Nevralgia di Arnold non è certamente tra le più comuni, quindi rassicurate il vostro lato ipocondriaco che già ritiene di esserne affetto ancor prima di averne letto i sintomi. Il termine nevralgia indica letteralmente la sofferenza di un nervo; il nervo in questione, il nervo occipitale di Arnold, decorre sotto la seconda vertebra cervicale, dunque vicinissimo all’attaccatura posteriore dei capelli, per intenderci. Sapere la sua localizzazione ci aiuterà in seguito a comprendere dove il medico andrà a ricercare una sofferenza quando ci prescriverà un’indagine strumentale come una Rx, una TAC o un RMN.
Le caratteristiche del mal di testa che la Nevralgia di Arnold genera nella sua forma tipica, sono:
Dolore intenso e pulsante
Distribuzione su metà della testa, fino a metà fronte.
La diagnosi è immediata: si andrà a comprimere con i pollici la zona cervicale dove decorre il nervo, come nella foto in basso, scatenando i sintomi sopra citati. Inoltre la zona che verrà tastata, potrebbe essere o molto sensibile o scarsamente recettiva allo stimolo tattile.
Una terapia spesso adottata per curare la Nevralgia di Arnold è la somministrazione di FANS (farmaci antinfiammatori non steroidei), ma se dopo 3-5 settimane non si hanno risultati soddisfacenti, quali evidente diminuzione del dolore e della frequenza degli attacchi, si tentano altre vie.
Personalmente nella mia esperienza di massaggiatore olistico, ho potuto apprezzare una buona diminuzione della sintomatologia con adeguati trattamenti e manipolazioni cervicali, ma molto dipende dalla causa che ha scatenato la nevralgia: gli esiti migliori si hanno sulle conseguenze dei traumi cervicali o sugli esordi d’artrosi.
